What Does the Filter Basket Spring Do?

Inside the portafilter there is a groove designed to hold the retaining spring. Once the filter basket is inserted, its outer edge comes into contact with the spring, and the tension of the spring helps retain the basket inside the portafilter.

The spring should hold the basket firmly enough for normal use and handling while still allowing the basket to be removed when cleaning or replacement is required.

What Does 1.4mm Mean?

Why Does the Filter Basket Fall Out of the Portafilter?

This can become particularly noticeable when knocking the used coffee puck out against a knock box bar and the filter basket comes out of the portafilter together with the coffee puck.

However, a loose filter basket does not automatically mean that the spring is defective. Compatibility between the filter basket, retaining spring and portafilter should also be checked.

When Should the Portafilter Spring Be Replaced?

Replacement may be necessary when:

  • the spring is deformed or damaged;
  • the spring is missing from the portafilter;
  • the filter basket is no longer held firmly enough;
  • the basket frequently comes out of the portafilter;
  • the existing spring has lost the tension required to retain the basket.

Before replacing the spring, it is also recommended to check the condition of the filter basket and portafilter to rule out compatibility issues or wear affecting other components.

Is It Compatible with Every Astoria Portafilter?

Compatibility should not be determined solely by the Astoria brand name. Depending on the model and configuration, different portafilters may use parts with different specifications.
