The BILOXI 2-in-1 DOUBLE Strainer [Urban Bar] is a cocktail strainer with a filtration system that differs from a conventional strainer: it integrates a coil and fine mesh into a single bar tool.

In its normal position, the coil helps retain ice and larger solid ingredients. When finer filtration is required, the mechanism can be slid forward, bringing the integrated fine mesh over the lip of the shaker.

This allows the bartender to choose between two levels of filtration without changing tools: a practical 2-in-1 concept for cocktail preparation.

One strainer, two levels of filtration

The feature that distinguishes the BILOXI is its movable filtration mechanism.

In its normal position, the strainer works with the coil, which forms a barrier between the cocktail and the contents of the shaker. During pouring, it helps retain ice cubes and larger solid ingredients.

When finer filtration is required, the mechanism can be slid forward. In this position, the integrated fine mesh moves over the shaker lip, allowing the cocktail to pass through the fine mesh before reaching the serving glass.

This second level of filtration helps retain smaller particles such as fruit pulp, fragments of herbs and fine pieces of ice created during shaking.

Why is it a 2-in-1 Strainer?

In a conventional bar setup, two separate tools are commonly used to provide these different levels of filtration:

  • a Cocktail Strainer with a coil to retain ice and larger ingredients;
  • a Fine Strainer with fine mesh to filter smaller particles.

BILOXI combines both filtration principles in a single construction. The coil performs the primary straining function, while the integrated fine mesh can be positioned over the pouring area whenever additional filtration is required.

The advantage is not simply having fewer tools: the bartender can select the appropriate level of filtration according to the cocktail being prepared.

Double Strainer vs Double Strain – what is the difference?

The product name Double Strainer should not be confused with the bartending technique known as Double Straining.

With the traditional Double Strain technique, the cocktail usually passes successively through two separate tools:

Shaker → Cocktail Strainer → Fine Strainer → Glass

BILOXI approaches the need for additional filtration with a different construction: the fine mesh is integrated directly into the strainer.

Therefore, BILOXI should not simply be considered identical to the traditional Double Strain technique. Its distinctive feature is that it provides two levels of filtration within a single tool.

When is the integrated fine mesh useful?

After shaking, a cocktail may contain small particles from the ingredients or fine fragments of ice.

Fine filtration can be particularly useful for cocktails prepared with:

  • fruit and fruit pulp;
  • citrus;
  • mint, basil and other herbs;
  • ingredients crushed using the Muddle technique;
  • ingredients that leave fibres or particles after shaking;
  • ice that produces small fragments during shaking.

The fine mesh helps reduce the amount of these particles reaching the serving glass and can contribute to a cleaner cocktail texture.

How do you use the BILOXI?

For regular straining, position the strainer on the shaker and use it with the mechanism in its normal position.

In this configuration, the coil helps keep the ice and larger solid ingredients inside the vessel while the cocktail is poured.

For finer filtration, slide the mechanism forward. The integrated fine mesh is then positioned over the shaker lip, allowing the liquid to pass through the mesh before reaching the glass.

After use, the mechanism can be returned to its normal position.

An interesting concept for the professional bar station

In a professional bar station, available space and tool organisation can influence the bartender's workflow.

BILOXI provides coil straining and fine filtration within the same tool, without requiring the bartender to change strainers when an additional level of filtration is needed.

The concept can be particularly practical for bartenders working with different cocktail recipes who want to move quickly between regular and finer filtration.

Premium 18/8 Japanese stainless steel

Urban Bar specifies 18/8 Japanese stainless steel for the BILOXI, a material with properties well suited to the repeated use expected from professional barware.

The material offers high corrosion resistance, helping protect the product against rust when correctly used and maintained.

The surface has a polished finish, complementing the clean appearance of the stainless steel construction.

A construction designed around filtration

The coil is one of the essential components of a cocktail strainer. It must allow liquid to pass while helping keep the ice inside the shaker.

BILOXI adds a movable integrated fine mesh to this construction. This combination is what distinguishes the product from a conventional cocktail strainer.

It is not simply a mesh added to the body of the tool: its design allows the fine mesh to be moved into the pouring area when the bartender requires finer filtration.

BILOXI or a separate Cocktail Strainer + Fine Strainer?

Both approaches can be appropriate, depending on the bartender's preferred workflow.

A separate Cocktail Strainer and Fine Strainer represent the traditional setup and allow each tool to be used independently.

BILOXI offers a different approach: both levels of filtration are integrated into a single tool.

For bartenders who prefer individual specialised tools, the traditional setup remains relevant. For those who appreciate 2-in-1 functionality and a more compact bar station, BILOXI provides an ingenious alternative.

Cleaning the fine mesh and coil

Both the coil and the fine mesh should be cleaned carefully after use.

Fruit pulp, citrus fibres, pieces of herbs and other cocktail residues can become trapped between the coil and within the fine mesh.

Rinsing the product as soon as possible after use helps prevent these residues from drying inside the filtration elements.

According to Urban Bar's specifications, the stainless steel BILOXI is dishwasher safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BILOXI 2-in-1 DOUBLE Strainer?
It is an Urban Bar cocktail strainer that combines a coil for regular straining with an integrated fine mesh for filtering smaller particles.

How does the sliding mechanism work?
In its normal position, the coil provides regular straining. Slide the mechanism forward and the integrated fine mesh moves over the shaker lip, allowing the cocktail to pass through the fine mesh as well.

Is BILOXI the same as Double Straining?
Not exactly. Traditional Double Straining generally uses a Cocktail Strainer and a separate Fine Strainer. BILOXI integrates two levels of filtration into a single tool.

What does the coil retain?
The coil primarily helps retain ice and larger solid ingredients inside the shaker during pouring.

What can the fine mesh filter?
The fine mesh helps filter smaller particles such as fruit pulp, fragments of herbs and fine pieces of ice.

Do I still need a separate Fine Strainer?
BILOXI already includes an integrated fine mesh. A separate Fine Strainer may still be useful if the bartender prefers the traditional Double Strain technique or wants to use the two tools independently.

What material is it made from?
The BILOXI is made from 18/8 Japanese stainless steel with high corrosion resistance and a polished finish.

Is it dishwasher safe?
Yes. Urban Bar specifies the stainless steel version as dishwasher safe. Rinsing after use is still recommended, particularly after contact with fruit pulp, citrus or herbs.

What are the dimensions?
The strainer measures 16 cm in length and 10 cm in width, with a stated weight of 113 g.

Who is the BILOXI designed for?
It is particularly interesting for bartenders who want to switch between regular and fine filtration using the same tool, as well as those who prefer a compact and well-organised bar station.
